Donniel Hartman here Shabbat, November 11-12

Rabbi Donniel Hartman, the charismatic and profound head of Jerusalem’s Hartman Institute, returns for his 16th visit Aitz Hayim to tackle the age old question: “What are Jews? A people or a religion? How does our identity make sense to us and to others? Is it about who we are or what we do?”

Naturally, he will approach this with a fresh and insightful perspective. Of course it begins with the Torah: Are we a Genesis people like Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, Leah, Billah and Zilpah? Or are we Exodus people like Moses, Aaron or Miriam? What is the ongoing tension between the two?

Donniel is a great teacher, who grew up as the son of David Hartman, one of Israel’s leading philosophers, served as an Israeli tank commander, and the rabbi for the JCC in New Jersey. Now Donniel is the director of the institute that focuses on the deepest philosophical questions in Jewish life and on engaging secular Israelis with Jewish ideas. Through our “Commitment to Learning” section on our website aitzhayim.org many of Donniel’s lectures from prior years are available.
